The Diaper Recyclers 2
A story about a disposable diapered man and his wet and clean disposable diapers being recycled. First he was taken to the diaper recycling center, then a man operating a special front-end loader that is used to scoop up large loads of bagged disposable diapers and load them into a bag opener. The thickly diapered man was scooped up and loaded into the bag opener along with another large load of bagged wet and messy disposable diapers, wipes, pull-ups, adult disposable diapers and booster pads. The man was on his way to being recycled with all of the diapers.
Once upon a time, in a world where disposable diapers were the norm, there lived a man who was always clad in thick, crinkly diapers. These diapers were not just for babies, but for adults too, like him. He had grown accustomed to the convenience of wearing them, but deep down, he longed for a more sustainable solution.
One day, the man's father had to take him to a special diaper recycling center. Excited by the prospect of a greener future, the man protested yet was whisked away to the center anyhow.
Upon arrival, he was greeted by a kind man operating a massive front-end loader. This man explained that they were going to recycle not just his diapers, but all the wet and messy disposable diapers and him in the facility.
As the front-end loader scooped him up and loaded him into the bag opener, the man felt a mix of emotions. He was nervous about what would happen next, but also hopeful that this process would lead to a better, more sustainable world.
The diaper recycling process:
Used disposable diapers begin the recycling process by entering a shredder that starts to break them apart. From here, the diapers are sent on to a pulper to begin processing. The next step sanitizes the diaper material and exposes it to a special chemical treatment to deactivate the super-absorbent polymers.
The recycling method heats used diapers together with sewage sludge up to 250°C with steam. This removes pathogens and drugs. The products biogas, biomass and plastics are created from the diapers.
Used diapers and/or adult incontinence products are generated. The materials are collected and transported to a Knowaste processor or plant. (In Canada, the only plant is in Mississauga, Ontario.)

The next step sanitizes the diaper material and exposes it to a special chemical treatment to deactivate the super-absorbent polymers. At the completion of this washing process, the plastic materials are removed and sent to a separate device for processing.
Plastic components are again filtered and cleaned in a final washing cycle. The plastic is then compressed into small pellets that can be sold for easy reuse.
Remaining parts of the diaper enter a screening process that captures any remaining traces of plastic and other organic material.
The fibres continue to go through another fine mechanical washing, cleaning and screening process. This produces a clean, long-length fibre that can be used in a myriad of products. The clean fibre is an excellent quality that is baled and sold for reuse on the open market.
The diapers and the diapered man were taken by the conveyor belt to a shredder.
The diapers were dumped into another conveyor belt
that took the man and the large loads of wet and dirty diapers upwards so that everything could drop down into a large high-volume shredder. The man was taken slowly upwards with a lot of wet and messy disposable diapers to a tipping point where the diapers all fell off the conveyor belt and down into the hopper of a large shredder. Large piles of diapers filled the hopper as the thickly diapered man fell down into the hopper of the shredder. He landed feet first in the hopper and then he ended up laying on his side while piles of more and more diapers, wipes fell down on top of him. The shredder slowly shredded the diapers below him and as it did, he was afraid to be shredded. The sides of the hopper were smooth and tall preventing him from being able to easily climb out. Soon, the shredder grabbed hold of the diapered man's feet and began to pull him down and through it, causing blood to gush all over the place, dripping down all over the diapers. The man's diaper went to pieces as his upper body was shredded.
The diapered man screamed loudly until he suddenly went silent.
Blood dripped everywhere and splattered all over the diapers. The remains of what was once a diapered and unwanted man. Scattered bone fragments dropped into the bin below. The strong scent of iron waffed from within the bin.
